Course Overview

This training package includes both RIIWHS205D Control Traffic with a Stop Slow Bat and RIIWHS302D Implement Traffic Management Plan. Courses may not run consecutively.

Traffic Control Training

RIIWHS205D Control Traffic with a Stop Slow Bat provides participants with the necessary knowledge, practical skills and understanding to be able to control traffic using a STOP/SLOW bat in accordance with approved procedures set by the Queensland Government. These Skills and knowledge will enable them as a traffic controller to plan & prepare their work, coordinate traffic, operate radios and clean up the worksite. Traffic Control is delivered to new entrants as well as applicants that are employed by companies that conduct and or supply Traffic Control services.

The course structure for new industry entrants is 1 day of classroom theory (8 hours) plus a minimum of 20 hours of practical experience at a roadwork site.

The course structure for participants who have previously completed the course and require a ‘refresher’ course in attending a 4-hour classroom theory course. There is no requirement to complete vocational placement. Participants must be able to demonstrate that they have completed a minimum of 16 hours performing stop/slow bat operations in the last 12 months prior to enrolling in the refresher course. Refresher training is required every three years.

Traffic Management Training

RIIWHS302D Implement Traffic Management Plan provides the skills and knowledge required to implement a traffic guidance scheme for roadwork ensuring traffic flow is maintained and the safety of the public and workers is maximized.

This unit requires compliance with the:

  • Code of Practice: “Traffic Management for construction or maintenance work 2008 QLD”
  • Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) – Part 3
  • Transport Operations Road Use Management Act and Regulations 1995
  • Site specific Traffic Guidance Scheme / Traffic Management Plans

The course structure for new industry entrants is 1 day of classroom theory (8 hours) plus three practical set-ups. This course must be completed within a maximum period of three months.

The course structure for persons who have previously completed the course and require a ‘refresher course’ is that they must be able to demonstrate knowledge of Traffic Management Implementation procedures and demonstrate 3 years of on-the-job industry experience prior to completing a 4-hour classroom theory ‘refresher’ course.

Log Book Requirements

Traffic Control Training

The formal theory component of RIIWHS205D Control Traffic with a Stop Slow Bat is delivered during the course. Students are then required to complete a minimum of 20 hours (logbook hours) of practical experience at the roadwork site under the direct supervision of an experienced accredited traffic controller. Site Skills Training will organise log book training for a $71 fee. After completion of the logbook hours students are then assessed at roadwork site by a Site Skills Training assessor. If students are deemed competent at the completion of final assessment they will be awarded a Statement of Attainment. Site Skills Training has a memorandum of understanding with an approved Traffic Management company to provide the 20 Hours practical experience.

Traffic Management Training

RIIWHS302D Implement Traffic Management Plan is required to be refreshed every three (3) years. Participants must present their traffic management wallet card and statement of attainment to participate in the refresher course. Participants will be required to submit Third Party Reports within 3 months after completion of the training. Site Skills Training has a memorandum of understanding with an approved Traffic Management company to provide the 3 Traffic Management set ups as experience.

Course Requirements

Participants must be over 18 years of age and will need a basic level of language and literacy as this course requires participant’s to do a theory assessment and receive 100% pass mark.

Drivers Licence – all participants must have held an open or provisional Queensland, interstate or foreign drivers licence for a continuous 12-month period in the last 5 years.

‘White Card’ – all participants must provide a construction industry white card prior to commencement.

The price of this course includes the purchase of a $30 Ready Reckoner book which is a mandatory requirement to complete the course. A reimbursement can be issued if the student has previously purchased this book elsewhere.

Participants must be aware of the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) Traffic Controller accreditation requirements prior to course commencement. TMR requires that applicants applying for the Traffic Controller accreditation must pass Criminal Offence and Traffic Offence History Requirements, Medical History Requirements and must meet all other TMR requirements. Both the theory and practical training and assessment must be completed within a 3-month period.

Qualification Outcomes

Traffic Control Training

Upon successful completion of RIIWHS205D Control Traffic with a Stop Slow Bat, including logbook, a Statement of Attainment will be issued along with the application to submit to the Department of Transport and Main Roads for a Traffic Controller Licence.

Traffic Management Training

Upon successful completion of this unit, a RIIWHS302D Implement traffic management plan Statement of Attainment will be issued along with a Traffic Management Implementation (TMI) Card.

A Statement of Attainment is issued upon completion of all elements of the course, including logbook and observations. This must be taken along with the Accredited Traffic Controller Application form and licence application fee to Qld Transport when lodging your Traffic Controller's Licence Application.

Traffic Management Training

This course is required to be refreshed every three (3) years. Participants must present their traffic management wallet card or statement of attainment to participate in the refresher course. Payment Options

Full payment for courses up to $1,500 must be made before the commencement of the course. For courses that cost over $1,500, Site Skills Training will hold an initial deposit of $1,500, with the balance to be paid upon commencement of the course.

Traffic Management training and assessment is conducted at Site Skills Training facility 1 Nestor Drive, Meadowbrook, Logan 4131.
