Course Overview

Many training courses focus on the process, but the process can’t work without the power, air, heating, cooling, waste disposal, chemicals and water the utility systems provide. The focus of attention on the process can also lead to a degree of neglect in the operation and maintenance of utilities that ultimately affects the process anyway.

This course has been prepared to give a practical understanding of plant utilities, their importance to the process, the start up sequence of a plant and the emergency response required in the event of loss of power and air. The course also examines the opportunities for energy efficiency and the relationship with plant emissions. It is an intensive course which relies heavily on the use of practical examples and exercises to explore utility operation, control, and optimisation.

Course Outcomes

Upon Successful completion of Understanding and Optimising Plant Utilities, participants will receive a Statement of Completion.

At the end of the course delegates will be able to explain the fundamental elements of utility systems, and explain the most common configurations of each utility and their interdependencies.

Most importantly the participants will understand the reliance of the process on the utilities. They will also understand how control regulates the performance of the utilities and the potential interactions as plant load changes.

This thorough understanding will then equip the delegate to appreciate common operating problems, their causes and their solutions.
