  • Mining service providers NRW and Primero Group has started recruitment for jobs like mining plant operators, production excavator operators, dump truck operators and more.
  • This project will have a strong focus on supporting local businesses with contracts valued at more than $2.3 billion awarded to date.
  • Construction for Rio Tinto’s Iron Ore project at Gudai-Darri is ahead of the expected completion date in early 2022.
  • Recruitment has begun for the mining service providers.

NRW, GHD, The Primero Group, and Worley will be spearheading the construction in the airport packages for Rio Tinto’s Gudai-Darri* (formerly Koodaideri) Iron Ore Project, 301km south of Port Hedland. NRW awarded subcontracts to Colas Australia Group, TEC Services Group, Fulton Hogan, Bennco Group, Brookdale Contractors, and Fencewright.


The project involves building the airport airside, landside infrastructure and buildings. They will also construct an asphalt runway, a taxiway, concrete apron, ground servicing equipment storage, shelters, airstrip lighting, apron floodlighting, navigational aids, telecommunications, fuel facility, airport terminal, roads, parking areas, and security fencing.


Primero is hiring an excavator operator for Fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) roster of three weeks on and one week off.

NRW is now hiring:

  • All round mining plant operators (multiple positions)
  • Production excavator 1900/2600 operators (multiple positions)
  • Dump truck 785 operators (multiple positions)
  • Grader D10 operators (multiple positions)
  • Grader 16M operators (multiple positions)
  • Scraper operators (multiple positions)

More than 600 workers are expected to arrive each day during peak operation once the construction is finished. Aircrafts including Boeing 737s, A320s, F100s and King Airs will be accommodated. The flight schedule includes four flights a week with potential for additional flights to be added in the New Year.

“These contracts have supported approximately 2,000 jobs in the construction phase and the mining operation is expected to support about 600 jobs on an ongoing basis. We are proud to support West Australian businesses as we progress a pipeline of investment opportunities in the Pilbara valued at more than A$10 billion over the three years to 2022.”

*Rio Tinto is working in close partnership with the Banjima and Yindjibarndi people as the traditional custodians of the land upon which the Gudai-Darri project, operations and rail are located. Following a request from Banjima Elders, the project, formally known as Koodaideri, will now be pronounced, and spelt in Banjima’s language as Gudai-Darri.
